OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

         Happy Halloween!!! I cannot believe we are already at the end of October. It has been another fun filled month in the Plums class. We focused on the Farm during the month of October. 

          We started the month talking about apples. We learned about the parts of an apple, the life cycle of an apple, where apples grow, etc. We had an apple taste test, made apple sauce and tried apple cider. During math small group we worked on making patterns with apples and sorting apples by color and then by size. The Dramatic Play Center was changed into a Farmer's Market. The students LOVED working and shopping at the Farmer's Market.

       We then focused on animals that live on the farm and things that grow on the farm. We read When the Leaf Blew In, The Big Red Barn & Apples and Pumpkins. During math small groups, we worked on sorting farm animals by size, identifying numbers and continuing to work on patterns. During literacy small groups, we continued to work on letter matching and identification. The students enjoyed painting and carving a pumpkin for Halloween. 

      We will begin our Fall Unit tomorrow. :)

       March was a GREAT month in the Plums class!! The students LOVED our community helpers theme!      The pretend play center was a student favorite this month. It was transformed into a fire station, police station, dentist office, doctor office and a construction site (which was the favorite!!) They had so much fun dressing up. :)      We've continued to work hard on our math skills during math small group. We've worked  on counting and number identification, following directions that contain prepositions (on, under, beside, behind, in front of, etc), completing patterns and making shapes.      We've also worked hard during literacy group! We've continued to work on  letter identification, letter sounds, spelling and writing our names, beginning sounds of words and rhyming words. They are all making so much progress!      We've read some fun books this  month! Each week we read about a new community helper! They all LOVE story time and do a great job answering

We've had a blast this month! We started the month off by learning all about Winter. Then, we learned all about Penguins and Polar Bears.  The pretend play center was transformed into a Winter Wonderland with a snowmen, a skating rink, hot chocolate stand and snowballs. The students had so much fun pretend ice skating and having snowball fights. They dressed up in winter jackets and scarves. They also enjoyed completing a winter/not winter clothes sorting activity.  The sensory bin was filled with fake snow and snowballs and winter trees, artificial snow and arctic animals were added to the block center.  During our Math Groups, we continued to work on copying and extending patterns, following directions containing prepositions, number identification and counting.  During our Literacy Groups, we worked on retelling stories, identifying letters and matching capital to lowercase letters and identifying letter sounds.  We had fun with science and conducted 2 experiments.     NOVEMBER      Another month has flown by in the Plums Class!! During the month of November, we learned all about Fall and Turkeys.      We worked hard on our math skills! The students sorted leaves by color and size. They made patterns with leaves and acorns. We made a fall tree by cutting out different color leaves (their cutting skills are improving) and counting the different colors, then graphing the colors. We discussed the concept of more/less. We worked on shape identification by playing Where is the Turkey (hiding behind different shapes)?  We worked on counting and number identification during story time, when we read 10 Fat Turkeys.        We also worked hard on Literacy skills. We worked on spelling their names with leaves. We also worked on letter matching, letter identification and beginning sounds.      We read The Leaf Man  and the students really enjoyed making their own Leaf Man during art with leaves they collected from outside.
